Guwahati: Opposition Congress in Assam said that it will make those who got Citizenship post March 1971 as stateless if the party comes to power in Assam.
Assam is witnessing bitter protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since last month.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, Ripun Bora on Sunday said, “Any foreigner who got citizenship post March 24, 1971 irrespective of their religious affiliation will be made stateless, if congress comes to power in Assam in 2021 assembly polls.”
Talking to ET, he said, “For those who will get Citizenship under the CAA, we will ask the Centre to take away those people, no government facility will be provided to this people.”
Bora said, “We are clear this is a violation of Assam Accord which stipulates foreigners who entered the state after the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, irrespective of their religious affiliation has to be deported. CAA is a violation of Assam Accord and we cannot accept the same.”
Assam Accord was signed after six yearlong anti foreigners’ movement in 1985.
