AJP Raises Safety, Transparency Concerns Over Bridge Projects in Assam

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Wednesday questioned the state government’s decision to award major bridge projects to Haryana-based SPS Construction India Pvt. Ltd, citing safety and transparency concerns. AJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan said reports of cracks in the newly inaugurated Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge had caused public concern, especially given the company’s alleged controversial track record in other states.
Bhuyan also questioned the timing of the bridge’s inauguration while technical evaluations by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee were reportedly underway. The party demanded an independent inquiry and public disclosure of safety audits for all bridges built by the firm in Assam.
SPS Construction India director Rohit Singla earlier defended the project, stating that the Rs 3,000 crore bridge uses a modern extradosed design and is the first of its kind in Northeast India.
