Gauhati High Court Closes PIL on Assam Zoo Conditions After Govt Assurance

The Gauhati High Court has closed a public interest litigation regarding conditions of animals in Assam’s zoos after the state government assured major modernisation of facilities. The PIL was filed by Prachurjya Borboruah seeking proper enclosure standards under Central Zoo Authority guidelines.
The Forest Department informed the court that a ₹345.67 crore project is underway to upgrade the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, with completion expected by November 2026.
The court allowed the petitioner to revive the case if the zoo modernisation fails to follow the prescribed guidelines.
