Assam Government Plans to Borrow Another ₹1,000 Crore Amid Rising Debt Concerns

Guwahati: The Assam Government is preparing to raise another ₹1,000 crore through an auction of government securities scheduled for November 9, less than two weeks after its previous borrowing exercise on October 27. The latest move comes amid increasing expenditure on welfare schemes and development projects. Reports suggest that the state’s outstanding debt has crossed ₹2 lakh crore, raising concerns over its growing financial liabilities.
The repeated borrowings have drawn criticism from Opposition parties and various organisations, which have questioned the state’s rising debt burden. Monthly expenditure on welfare initiatives, including Orunodoi, Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu, reportedly amounts to hundreds of crores. However, the government maintains that borrowing is necessary to finance infrastructure development, welfare programmes and other commitments.
