Medical Team Reports Infant’s Death Due to Milk Aspiration, Family Demands Further Investigation

A week after the death of an 11-month-old infant, a three-member medical team from Jorhat Medical College and Hospital reported that the child died of suffocation caused by milk accumulation in the windpipe. The report dismissed allegations of wrong treatment, stating the child suffered from epilepsy and had been previously admitted.

The family, dissatisfied with the report, questioned why they weren’t informed about the epilepsy diagnosis and appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for a proper investigation. The infant died on July 10, a day before her first birthday, after allegedly fainting post-injection by a nurse. The incident led to an uproar, with the family breaking PICU glass and causing fear among the hospital staff and patients, prompting the hospital to form a medical team to investigate.
