10 Dead, 134 Infected as Japanese Encephalitis Spreads to New Areas in Assam

Japanese encephalitis has claimed 10 lives and infected 134 people in Assam, with Nalbari, Barpeta, Jorhat, and Darrang being worst affected. According to Dr. Manoj Choudhury of NHM Assam, the situation is under control compared to previous years. However, the disease’s spread to non-traditional areas is a concern. It is transmitted by mosquitoes, often linked to proximity with pigs and cows. Fogging and awareness drives are ongoing, though rain hampers chemical effectiveness. Free tests and treatment are available at government hospitals. Vaccination will begin in September, targeting vulnerable zones.
