12-Hour Bandh in Kokrajhar Over Alleged Rape Case; Situation Remains Peaceful

A 12-hour bandh called on Sunday disrupted normal life across Assam’s Kokrajhar district following public outrage over the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman. Shops, markets, transport services, schools and offices remained largely closed, while essential services continued.
The district administration imposed prohibitory orders and deployed security forces to maintain law and order. Officials said the bandh passed off peacefully with no incidents reported.
The protest followed the arrest of the accused, Rafikul Islam, in connection with the alleged assault in the Patharghat area. Police said investigations are underway and appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours.
