18 Arrested in Karbi Anglong Witch-Hunting Killing Case

Police have arrested 18 people, including four women, for allegedly burning a couple to death on suspicion of witchcraft in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh said a scientific investigation would be conducted and warned that such crimes would not be tolerated.

The incident occurred on December 30 at Beloguri Munda Gaon under Hawraghat police station, where the victims, Gardi Birowa and Mira Birowa, were attacked by villagers. Police registered a suo motu case under the Assam Witch Hunting Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials and residents stressed the need for stronger awareness campaigns to curb superstition-driven violence.
