22 Arrested as Runikhata Situation Stabilises After Violence

The law and order situation in Runikhata, Chirang district, is gradually returning to normal after recent violence linked to a forest eviction drive. Police have arrested 22 individuals so far, identifying them through video evidence and other inputs.

Security forces, including police, CRPF, and RAF, remain deployed to maintain strict vigil. Senior officials are stationed in the area, and authorities say the situation is now under control.

Tensions had escalated on Sunday evening in Garubhasa during police action, with stone pelting injuring two constables. Prompt deployment of additional forces prevented further escalation.

The district administration has invited people to submit evidence related to the incident, while internet services in Chirang and Kokrajhar may be restored soon.

Kokrajhar MP Jayanta Kumar Basumatary called for a fair probe, urging authorities to ensure innocent people are not harassed. He also criticised BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary over his response, terming the incident avoidable and unfortunate.
