Assam Sees Sharp Decline in Maternal Deaths Linked to Sepsis

Guwahati: Assam has recorded a significant reduction in the proportion of maternal deaths attributed to sepsis, dropping from 21 per cent in July to 8 per cent in October 2026. Health Minister Ashok Singhal credited strengthened infection-control measures and the efforts of healthcare workers for the improvement. Recognising the progress, the Union Health Ministry invited Assam to share its infection-prevention model with other states.
The state government has introduced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for infection prevention and a digital Infection Prevention and Control Mechanism (IPCM) portal to monitor hygiene and safety practices in public hospitals. Singhal appreciated the contributions of doctors, nurses and National Health Mission (NHM) personnel, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safer maternal and newborn healthcare.
