Former Assam Governor Warned of Strategic Threats from Bangladesh

In 1998, former Assam Governor Lt Gen SK Sinha cautioned against Bangladesh’s longstanding interest in Assam and the Northeast. He highlighted historical claims by leaders like Moinul Haque Choudhury, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who viewed Assam’s resources as vital for East Pakistan and later Bangladesh’s growth.

Lt Gen Sinha’s report warned of demographic challenges from population inflows into the Northeast, driven by Bangladesh’s density issues. He urged vigilance against such “demographic invasions,” emphasizing the strategic importance of the region for India.
