Gauhati High Court Halts Panchayat Polls in Nine Assam Districts

The Gauhati High Court issued an interim stay on Panchayat elections in nine Assam districts, citing faulty delimitation. This replaces the earlier statewide halt from December 2024.

The court directed the government to address delimitation concerns based on Census 2001 data. Advocate AK Talukdar criticized the lack of adherence to proper protocols.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma supported the delay, citing academic calendar conflicts and suggested April, during Bohag Bihu, as a better time for the elections.
