Centre Assures Probe into Illegal Coal Mining in Assam Amid Forest Cover Decline

The Central government has assured a thorough investigation into illegal coal mining in Assam. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised concerns in Lok Sabha over deforestation, highlighting discrepancies in Eco Sensitive Zone notifications of Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. He questioned the clearance given for oil and gas projects by Vedanta Ltd and called for a probe into district forest officers’ roles. The Minister acknowledged forest loss from 2021–2023 and promised action.
