IIT Guwahati to Study Brahmaputra Erosion from Arunachal to Bangladesh Border

Brahmaputra Board Chairman Dr. Ranbir Singh announced that IIT Guwahati will study erosion along the Brahmaputra River from Arunachal Pradesh to the Bangladesh border. The project, in collaboration with NEHARI, aims to identify erosion-prone stretches and suggest mitigation strategies. Since 1950, over 4.27 lakh hectares—7.4% of Assam’s area—have been lost to erosion. A new Rs 240 crore building for the Board’s office has also been approved. Additionally, a study on Dimapur’s urban flooding and DPRs for multipurpose river projects are underway. Representatives from nine basin states attended the Board’s 85th meeting.
