Assam Congress Urges Governor to Intervene in Eviction Drives

The Assam Congress has urged Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to intervene in ongoing eviction drives, alleging they violate constitutional and legal safeguards. In a memorandum, the party claimed that indigenous communities like Bodos, Karbis, Garos, Ahoms, Assamese Hindus, and Muslims are being displaced without due process. Congress accused the State government of ignoring standard operating procedures and violating laws including the Forest Rights Act, PESA Act, and Article 21. It demanded a halt to evictions, a probe panel for drives since 2022, and a clear land rights policy to protect long-settled indigenous people.
