AATS Opposes ST Status for Six Assam Communities

The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) has opposed the Centre’s move to grant ST status to six Assam communities — Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, Chutia, and Tea Tribes. In a meeting at Guwahati, the body called the proposal a “dangerous political conspiracy” and warned it would harm existing tribal rights and representation. AATS demanded withdrawal of the ST Amendment Bill, 2019, and threatened statewide protests if implemented. It urged the government to protect the interests of recognized indigenous tribes.
