Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Reopen on October 23

Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary will reopen on October 23 after its monsoon closure. Ranger Pranjal Baruah said damaged infrastructure has been repaired and both jeep and elephant safaris will resume. Located 35 km from Guwahati, the 38.81 sq km sanctuary hosts the world’s highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses—107 as per the 2022 census—along with rich bird and animal diversity. Pobitora recently saw a 14% rise in tourist visits, drawing over 34,000 visitors last season. The sanctuary has maintained a strong anti-poaching record, with no rhino poaching since 2016.
