Thousands Join Torch Rally in Margherita Demanding ST Status, Autonomous Council for Tai Ahoms

The coal town of Margherita witnessed a massive torch-lit rally on Sunday as over 10,000 members of Tai Ahom organisations marched demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and an autonomous council for the community.
Organised by the Tai Ahom Unity Platform, the rally saw participation from several groups, including ATASU, TAYPA, Ahom Sabha, and Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad. The procession began near Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha’s statue and moved through NH-315, filling the streets with fiery slogans and flambeaus.
Leaders accused the BJP governments at both Centre and State of failing to honour promises made since 2014 regarding ST recognition. They warned of stronger protests and possible election boycotts if demands remain unmet before the 2026 Assembly polls.
The rally marked one of the largest Tai Ahom mobilisations in recent years, highlighting the community’s growing frustration over delayed constitutional recognition and self-governance.
