Karbi Groups Warn of Mass Agitation Over Unmet ST(H) and Welfare Council Demands

Karbi organisations have threatened a mass democratic movement if their key demands—rectified ST(H) certificates, amendment of the Assam Panchayat Act, and creation of the Karbi Autonomous Welfare Council—are not fulfilled before the Assembly polls. At a November 13 meeting, they criticised the government for failing to implement commitments made in the 2021 MoS and during a meeting with the CM in April 2025. Nearly 4 lakh Karbis outside autonomous districts still lack recognised ST status, leading to major educational and job disadvantages. They also protested the reservation of Dimoria constituency for SCs, calling it unjust for a largely Karbi population.
