Protest in Jorhat Revives Demand for ST Status for Six Communities

The demand for ST status for six Assam communities gained new momentum as ATASU held a large protest rally in Jorhat on Thursday. Thousands from the Tai Ahom community and others marched in Mariani, urging the government to grant ST status before the 2026 Assembly elections.
ATASU president Basanta Gogoi accused the government of failing its promise and warned of political consequences if the issue remains unresolved. He said the movement aims to protect Assam’s indigenous identity and is not directed against any community.
The long-standing demand covers the Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, Tea Tribes, and Chutia communities.
