Cotton University Develops India’s First Indigenous AD-BNCT Cancer Therapy Technology

Cotton University has created India’s first indigenous Accelerator-Driven Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (AD-BNCT) system, a next-generation cancer treatment for aggressive and radio-resistant tumours. The university’s CUPAC-NE team designed a BNCT-specific Beam Shaping Assembly entirely in-house, overcoming global material shortages and strict IPR barriers.

The research, led by Dimpal Saikia under Prof JJ Das, was published on November 12, 2025. The project received support from several national institutions.

AD-BNCT offers a highly targeted, non-invasive treatment method and could be far more cost-effective than Proton therapy. Cotton University is also building a 5 MV accelerator facility to boost research and has signed an MoU with Dr B Barooah Cancer Institute for clinical advancement.
