MLA Raises Concern Over Rising Cancer Cases in Assam

Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar on Friday urged the Assam government to take stronger action against the rising cases of cancer in the State. Moving a private members’ resolution, he called for better early detection, free treatment, more specialists, and expanded cancer care facilities.
Sikdar also sought restrictions on tobacco and alcohol and demanded free medicines for cancer patients. Opposition members supported the proposal and suggested improving Ayushman Bharat benefits and financial relief distribution.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said cancer care in Assam has improved with new hospitals and advanced facilities. He noted increased testing may be contributing to higher case detection. Sikdar later withdrew the resolution after the response.
