Deori Committee Renews Demand for Sixth Schedule Status

The Deori Assong Sixth Schedule Demand Committee has reiterated its demand for inclusion of the Deori community under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Leaders said the Deori Autonomous Council was created for the community’s development but lacks financial and administrative autonomy without Sixth Schedule status.

The committee argued that the Deoris, already listed as ST, deserve the same provisions given to Bodo, Karbi and Dimasa councils. They also noted that four seats of the council are still pending allocation and said full recognition is necessary to protect land rights, resources and cultural identity.
