6,000 Bighas Cleared in Lutumari Reserve Forest Eviction Drive

Authorities in Nagaon cleared nearly 6,000 bighas of encroached land in Lutumari Reserve Forest during a two-day eviction drive. Around 70% of families vacated voluntarily, while the rest were removed with machinery support.

The eviction covered areas including Kandapara, Chankhula Majgaon and Padumnik, where long-standing plantations and houses had been built by families displaced earlier by river erosion.

Officials said the operation was peaceful and essential for restoring forest land and reducing human-elephant conflict. However, concerns remain over rehabilitation and possible legal disputes from the displaced families.
