Assam Govt to Hold Talks Amid Protests Over ST Status Demand

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government will meet protesting groups to clarify the report recommending ST status for six communities — Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes.

Protests erupted after the recommendations were tabled in the assembly, with CCTOA leading the agitation over fears of losing existing tribal benefits. Sarma clarified that the report proposes a three-tier reservation system ensuring no impact on current ST groups.

A three-member ministerial team will hold discussions with the protestors, and Sarma said he may join if needed. He also invited suggestions from the opposition.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under Section 163 BNSS were imposed in Kokrajhar after violent protests at the BTC Secretariat.
