Centre Orders Performance Study of Namrup-III Fertilizer Plant

The Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has asked Projects & Development India Limited (PDIL) to assess the Namrup-III unit of BVFCL and suggest improvements for optimal functioning. A parliamentary committee has urged swift action once the study is complete.

The committee also recommended fast-tracking the proposed Namrup-IV fertilizer plant, ensuring timely commissioning without cost escalation. The new plant, with a 12.7 lakh metric ton annual capacity, aims to strengthen domestic urea production and support Atmanirbhar Bharat targets.

Once operational, the Namrup facility is expected to serve the Northeast and nearby states, and potentially export to Bhutan and Myanmar. The committee noted that current domestic production lags demand, with consumption expected to rise significantly by 2035-36.
