Fake Seed Menace Hits Nagaon as Agriculture Dept Cracks Down

A surge in counterfeit agricultural seeds has been reported in Nagaon district, raising serious concerns among farmers during the ongoing Rabi season.

Farmers alleged that substandard seeds were sold as premium varieties in western Nagaon and local markets, aided by lapses in licensing by the Assam Agriculture Department. In Shantijan market, several traders were found operating without proper infrastructure despite holding licenses.

Following media reports, the district agriculture department conducted surprise raids, sealing multiple unauthorized seed shops and warning of strict action against repeat offenders. Affected farmers have demanded accountability and tougher measures to curb the fake seed racket.
