NFR Tech Measures Save Over 160 Elephants in 2025

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said it protected over 160 elephants in 2025 by adopting technology-driven safety measures to prevent train collisions.

NFR deployed an AI-based Intrusion Detection System using Distributed Acoustic System technology to detect elephant movement near tracks and alert loco pilots in real time. The system operates across major elephant corridors in Rangiya, Alipurduar, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions, with expansion underway.

Additional steps included ‘Plan Bee’, speed restrictions, coordination with forest officials, and crew sensitisation. Following NFR’s success, Indian Railways expanded the AI system nationwide to over 1,100 route kilometres.
