Protest Erupts in Kaliabor Over NH-715 Four-Lane Alignment

The Kaliabor Four-Lane Demand Committee on Friday renewed protests against the proposed bypass alignment of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh four-lane project on NH-715, demanding that the highway pass through Jakhalabandha. Hundreds gathered at the Kaliabor revenue circle office, leading to brief tension with police. Members of All Assam Students’ Union and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad joined the agitation, warning of intensified protests if demands are ignored. Protesters said the bypass would harm livelihoods, agriculture, and tea gardens, and urged the government to reconsider the alignment despite the Centre approving Rs 6,957 crore for the project.
