Massive Fire Destroys Mulai Kathoni 2.0, Over 5,000 Trees Lost

A massive fire broke out on Sunday at Mulai Kathoni 2.0 near the Baghmara picnic spot, destroying over 5,000 trees and large stretches of regenerated forest. The blaze also killed birds and insects, dealing a major setback to conservation efforts along the Brahmaputra riverbanks.

The forest was developed under the initiative of Munmuni Payeng, daughter of Padma Shri awardee Jadav Payeng. Munmuni alleged the fire was deliberately set and said volunteers and students battled the flames for hours.

The district administration and Forest Department have taken note of the incident, while Chandra Mohan Patowary later contacted the team to assess the damage. An official report is awaited.
