BJP to Announce Assam Poll Candidates by February, Says CM Sarma

A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ready for the 2026 Assembly elections and will announce candidates in the first or second week of February. Speaking in Baksa district, he said the BJP will contest with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners and is confident of forming the next government.
Sarma said seat-sharing talks are ongoing, especially in the Bodoland region, where the BJP may contest five to six seats under the Sixth Schedule, subject to alliance discussions. He noted differing dynamics in Bodoland compared to Dispur, amid mixed signals from allies UPPL and BPF. Reflecting on 2025, Sarma called it a “year of contrasts,” citing major cultural milestones alongside moments of grief.
