Assam to Push Back Declared Foreigners Within a Week: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state will ensure that anyone declared a foreigner by a Foreigners’ Tribunal is pushed back within seven days. He said around 2,000 illegal foreigners have already been deported across the Bangladesh border in recent months under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.

Sarma said the move aims to prevent delays that earlier allowed declared foreigners to prolong their stay through legal appeals. He added that the policy gained clarity after the Supreme Court of India upheld relevant provisions of the Citizenship Act and the Expulsion Act, strengthening Assam’s action against illegal infiltration.
