CM Sarma Warns of “Disturbing” Assam Demographics Ahead of 2027 Census

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday warned that the 2027 population census could reveal “disturbing figures” for the state, alleging that nearly 40 per cent of Assam’s population may be of Bangladeshi origin. Calling it “bad news for Assam,” he linked the projected data to long-standing concerns over illegal immigration and its impact on the state’s demographic balance.
Sarma reiterated that unchecked immigration poses risks to Assam’s identity, security and political stability, and stressed the need for firm legal measures. His remarks followed a recent controversial statement by a Bangladeshi political leader, which Sarma cited while underscoring the urgency of the issue.
