Eviction Drive in Karbi Anglong Affects Over 600 Families

A large-scale eviction drive was carried out at Bakaliaghat in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Village and Professional Grazing Reserve land, affecting over 600 families. The operation, launched early Tuesday, covered more than 2,100 houses, religious structures, a local market and business establishments.

The drive began after prior notices and was conducted with heavy police deployment and officials from multiple departments. Authorities said the first phase aims to clear around 350 bighas of land as part of the state government’s effort to reclaim encroached grazing reserves.

While some locals supported the move, many displaced families expressed distress and demanded proper relief and rehabilitation from the government.
