Assam Becomes Oil-Producing State with Namrup-Borhat Discovery: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state became the first to be engaged in oil production in 2025 following a crude oil discovery in the Namrup-Borhat block by Oil India Limited. Calling it a major milestone, he said the find would boost state revenue, generate jobs, and accelerate economic growth, especially in Upper Assam.
The discovery at the Namrup Borhat-1 well adds a new chapter to Assam’s century-old association with hydrocarbons, which began at Digboi. Sarma noted that enhanced oil production would strengthen Assam’s role in India’s energy sector and support infrastructure and industrial development, while contributing to national energy security.
