Centre Receives Assam Proposal for ST Status to Six Communities

The Centre informed Parliament that it has received Assam’s proposal to grant Scheduled Tribe status to six communities—Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes. Union Minister Durgadas Uikey said the proposal is under examination as per laid-down procedures involving the RGI and NCST. The Assam Cabinet had approved the move in November 2025, though it faces opposition from tribal organisations.
