Assam Reclaims 912 Bighas of Encroached Forest Land at Damcherra

The Assam government has cleared 912 bighas of alleged encroached land in two days during an eviction drive at Damcherra under the Gharmura forest range near the Mizoram border. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the reclaimed area in Hailakandi district is larger than the IIT Guwahati campus, highlighting the government’s commitment to protect forest land. The drive, part of a statewide eviction initiative, initially affected 522 families, later reduced to 516 after voluntary relocation. Officials said the operation is close to completion.
