Assam Plans Water Metro Services for Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Tezpur

Assam may soon introduce water metro services in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Tezpur to improve urban transport. Guwahati has emerged as the most viable city, with four proposed routes and 12 terminals, due to strong commuter demand, riverfront activity and tourism potential.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited has submitted a feasibility report to the Inland Waterways Authority of India. While Dibrugarh–Tezpur has limited economic viability at present, officials say supportive policies could improve prospects. The project aligns with the Centre’s push to expand inland water transport under a proposed National Water Metro Scheme.
