AJP Raises Safety, Transparency Concerns Over Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge Project

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has questioned the Assam government over awarding major bridge projects to SPS Construction India Pvt. Ltd, citing alleged past controversies and safety concerns. AJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan referred to reports of cracks in the newly inaugurated Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge, which have caused public apprehension.
Bhuyan alleged that the company, linked to the Singla Group, has been associated with bridge collapses and construction-related incidents in other states. He also questioned why the Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge was inaugurated while technical evaluations by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee were reportedly underway.
The party demanded an independent inquiry and public disclosure of safety audits for all bridges built by the company in Assam. Meanwhile, SPS Construction India has defended the project, stating the bridge uses a modern extradosed design and is the first of its kind in Northeast India.
