Centre, Assam Roll Out Major Rural and Farm Schemes; Big Boost to Roads and Farmers

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday announced major rural infrastructure and agriculture initiatives in Assam, including approval of 528 roads and 62 bridges worth Rs 1,817 crore. He said nearly 14 km of rural roads are being built daily and Rs 1,100 crore has been allocated under MGNREGA.

Additional support includes funds for power tillers, pulses promotion, mustard procurement and formation of expert teams for farm development. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam has secured Rs 1,800 crore for 1,500 km of new roads under PMGSY and released financial aid to Farmer Producer Organisations. He also announced land pattas for tea garden workers from March 13, highlighted gains in tea exports and paddy procurement, and confirmed PepsiCo’s plan to set up units in Nalbari.
