Assam Govt Considers Traditional Dress Code for Batadrava Than Visitors

The Assam government is considering making traditional attire mandatory for devotees visiting Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, to maintain the sanctity of the sacred site. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said visitors above 12 years of age may soon be required to wear traditional dress, and the decision could be implemented within a few days.

The announcement came during the ongoing five-day Doul Festival, where the traditional ritual of Phaku Diya was performed.

Batadrava Than was redeveloped as the Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Avirbhav Kshetra at a cost of ₹227 crore across 162 bighas of land and was inaugurated on December 29, 2025, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
