Assam Built 1,000 km of Embankments in Five Years: Minister Pijush Hazarika

Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday claimed that the state has seen a major transformation in flood management over the past five years. Speaking in Silchar while reviewing preparations for Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit on March 14, he said the government has built nearly 1,000 kilometres of new embankments across Assam.

Hazarika said many areas earlier had weak or no embankment protection. He added that the current government accelerated construction compared to the earlier Indian National Congress government.

The minister also highlighted the use of geo-tube and mega geo-tube technology to strengthen embankments and reduce the risk of breaches. He acknowledged that several older embankments still need reinforcement and said the government will focus on strengthening them over the next five years.

Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, and Dipayan Chakraborty were present during the visit.
