Assam Plans Medical College in Every District by 2030: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government aims to establish a medical college in every district by 2030 to strengthen healthcare and medical education. Assam currently has 15 medical colleges, while 10 more hospitals worth about ₹6,000 crore are under construction.

Once completed, MBBS seats are expected to rise from around 2,000 to nearly 5,000. A new medical college in Bongaigaon is also expected to start next year.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Assam already has 12 cancer hospitals, with more planned under a partnership with Tata Trusts, an initiative supported by industrialist Ratan Tata. He also announced plans to install a proton beam therapy machine at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, aiming to make Assam a major centre for cancer treatment.

The government says expanding medical infrastructure has helped reduce maternal and infant mortality and improve healthcare services across the state.
