AGP Sees Major Shift in Strategy, Drops MLAs and Fields New Faces

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), once a key force of Assamese regionalism, is witnessing a major shift in its electoral strategy for the 2026 Assam polls.

The party will contest 26 seats under the NDA alliance, renominating only 5 of its 9 sitting MLAs while dropping four senior leaders. Its candidate list includes several new entrants, including 13 from minority communities.

This reshuffle has triggered internal dissent, with resignations and protests reported. The move reflects AGP’s focus on immediate electoral gains and alliance dynamics over traditional organisational loyalty.
