Congress Alleges Foreign Asset Links to Assam CM’s Family, Sarma Denies Claims

The Indian National Congress on Sunday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma of serious irregularities, including holding multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets.
At a press conference, Congress leader Pawan Khera claimed that documents suggest Sarma’s wife possesses passports from the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt, questioning the legality under Indian citizenship laws. He also alleged the couple holds foreign properties and business interests, including a US-based firm, which were not disclosed in election affidavits.
The Congress demanded a probe and sought intervention from the Election Commission.
Responding strongly, Sarma dismissed the allegations as “malicious and politically motivated,” accusing Congress of misleading voters ahead of elections. He announced plans to file criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera.
The controversy marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the BJP and Congress as campaigning intensifies before the Assam Assembly polls.
