Congress Seeks Cancellation of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Nomination Over Asset Disclosure

The Congress on Monday approached the Election Commission of India, seeking cancellation of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s nomination over alleged non-disclosure of his wife’s foreign assets.
The complaint, filed by Congress candidate Bidisha Neog before Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claimed that mandatory details of offshore assets were omitted from the election affidavit.
Citing documents from Dubai authorities, the Congress alleged that Sarma’s wife owns properties in Dubai and that the non-disclosure violates legal provisions, making the nomination liable for rejection. The party has also sought investigations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Earlier, Congress leader Pawan Khera raised similar allegations regarding foreign assets and multiple passports.
Rejecting the claims, Sarma said they were based on false information from a Pakistani social media group. Meanwhile, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi challenged him to deny the allegations under oath.
