Tea Workers Protest Uprooting of Tea Bushes at Doomdooma Estate

Workers at the Duamara tea estate near Doomdooma staged a two-hour sit-in on Saturday, opposing the alleged uprooting of tea bushes for areca nut and ginger cultivation.
The protest, supported by the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association, accused the estate management of taking the decision without consulting workers, unions, or stakeholders.
ATTSA leader Jogyeswar Nanda said the move violates lease agreements with the Assam government and threatens workers’ livelihoods.
Protesters warned that converting tea land to other crops could harm the region’s tea industry and set a dangerous precedent.
