Exit Polls Banned as Assam Prepares for Voting on April 9

With Assam heading to polls on April 9, the Election Commission of India has banned exit polls from 7 am on polling day until April 29 across five poll-bound regions. Violations under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, can attract up to two years of imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Campaigning in Assam ended on April 7, marking the start of the 48-hour silence period, during which rallies and public meetings are prohibited.

In Kamrup (Metro), authorities imposed restrictions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Public gatherings of five or more people are banned, along with loudspeakers and entry of outside political workers.

Candidates are also barred from campaigning within 100 metres of polling stations. Officials said these measures aim to ensure peaceful and fair elections, despite challenges in monitoring digital campaigns.
