Runikhata Eviction Drive Turns Violent, Clashes Erupt

Tension erupted in Runikhata, Chirang district, along the India–Bhutan border after an eviction drive on forest land led to violent clashes between forest officials and Adivasi protesters. Demonstrations by AASAA and ASSU turned aggressive, with reports of firing by forest personnel to control the crowd. Protesters allegedly burned vehicles and attempted to attack the forest office.

At least one police officer was injured, while several women were hurt during a baton charge. The unrest followed the detention of 25 Adivasi individuals during the eviction, sparking protests demanding their release.

Local groups have accused officials of assault and misconduct, alleging excessive force and targeting of Adivasi communities. Protests have been announced across the Bodoland Territorial Region as tensions remain high.
