Himanta Targets Dynastic Politics After Congress Suffers Major Defeat in Assam

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised dynastic politics after Congress recorded one of its worst performances in Assam. He said voters rejected leaders who depended on family legacy instead of building their own identity.
Sarma referred to the defeats of Congress leaders like Gaurav Gogoi, son of former CM Tarun Gogoi, Debabrata Saikia, son of Hiteswar Saikia, and Diganta Barman, son of former CM Bhumidhar Barman.
Congress won only 19 seats in the 126-member Assembly, down from 26 in 2021. Gaurav Gogoi accepted moral responsibility for the defeat and said the party would rebuild and continue as a constructive opposition.
